J Sheridan Le Fanu
Green tea? The title of a short story by J. Sheridan Le Fanu perhaps? An allusion to that story’s claims that the properties of green tea ‘open the inner eye’? What the…’fraid not, so don’t go dashing off to the nearest supermarket for a packet and a brew-up and expect to meet Vishnu whilst you sip your cuppa along with the toasted crumpet. Don’t let that put you off though - green tea does have interesting properties – one being that it is higher in anti-oxidants than the fermented cup of black char we Brits relish as our national brew.
The latest claim this week is that green tea may cut the risk of prostate cancer . The Japanese study behind the news found that men who drink 5 or more cups of green tea a day halve their risk of prostate cancer. The full study can be found here
Having a close male relative – father, brother etc who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer , increases the risk of prostate cancer; green tea is an acquired taste, but it’s possibly something that men who are aware of the incidence of familial prostate cancer should be encouraged to drink. That and consuming pumpkin seeds, cooked tomatoes, and saw palmetto extract. Shame no one’s brought out a green tea beer – we might have an epidemic of STIs caused by binge drinking but at least the nation’s prostate health would be secure.
